The term of personal information planners (PIP) or English personnel information manager (PIM) designates a software, which administers personal data such as contacts, tasks, dates, Todo lists, notes of all kinds, and in the extended understanding also documents such as letters, faxes and enamels.

PIM software can be conceived both for individual users and for the enterprise in networks (LAN or WAN). With network solutions the user administration plays an important role, since each user would like to administer and not all users all data regard or to work on be supposed its own data. Furthermore PIM software on Handheld computers plays an important role.

Since many different data are to be administered, against the memory management by PIM software particularly high demands are made. From view of the user however the ergonomics of the user surface of the software is at least just as important. PIM users would like to write e.g. gladly during a telephone call discussion notes, find within seconds contact contacts, and let themselves all activities, which are linked with a contact, be listed.

With the user surface of PIM software therefore determined "metaphors" have themselves as particularly successful proven, e.g.:

• Rolodex: PIMs of this kind orient themselves at rotatable record sheet systems.
• Filofax: PIMs of this kind orient themselves at ring binder-like paper Organizern.
• Outliner: PIMs of this kind use a tree-like navigation structure, similarly as in the Microsoft Windows Explorer.
