Paul Langerhans (*25. July 1847 in Berlin, "† 20 July 1888 in Funchal/Madeira) be a German pathologist. After it the Langerhans islands are designated.

Life

Long Hans came from a well-known scientist family. His father Paul and its younger brothers were physicists. One of them, Robert long Hans was an assistant of Rudolf Virchow and became later even a pathology professor.

After its conclusion at the High School to the grey monastery in Berlin it wrote itself at the age of 16 years at the University of Jena, where it studied medicine. During this time it was affected strongly by Ernst Haeckel and Karl Gegenbaur. Under the Professur of Heinrich Adolf of Bardeleben and Rudolf Virchow put down 1869 it his Habilitation. In the same year of long Hans discovered the Langerhans islands in the pancreas, designated after him. One year before he with a technology of Julius Cohnheim the dendrites in the skin had already discovered, from which he believed that they were nerve cells.

1870 undertook long Hans as well as Johann Samuel Heinrich Kiepert an expedition to Egypt, Syria and Palestine, in order to accomplish investigations at leprosy patients. During the French-Prussian war he worked for the Germans in a military hospital. 1871 it accepted a place as lecturer and a professor at the University of Freiburg in mash gau, however 1874 its illness at Tuberkulose already forced it to terminate its career as scientists. After numerous cures did not bring improvement in Italy, Germany and Switzerland, it pulled after Funchal. The there mild climate led to an improvement of its health situation, so that it could work shortly thereafter again as the medical profession.

During his time on larva Irish Republican Army long Hans began to be interested in the sea animals and plants of the Portuguese coast. Among other things it examined a new kind of worm from the class of the Vielborster, which it called its friend Virchow in honours Virchowia. 1888 died Paul Langerhans at a kidney illness.
