Dr. Ottmar Kohler (* 19. June 1908 in Gummersbach; "† 27 July 1979 in Idar Oberstein) was a German physician, that in the public better admits was under the designation "the physician of Stalingrad".

During the battle around Stalingrad Ottmar Kohler operated as a surgeon of a medical company by that legendary 2 February 1943. On this day began for it and for 90.000 German soldiers - after the surrender of the 6. Army - the shank in Russian camps. First in Dubowka, 30 kilometers north of Stalingrad, then in twelve further prisoner-of-war camps, he than physician under inconceivable conditions worked. A upper arm Amputation succeeded to it with a borrowed iron saw, a head operation with drill and chisel from a camp carpenter's workshop.

Dr. Ottmar Kohler arrived on the last day of the yearly 1953 - eight one half year after end of war - from ten-year shank in the camp Friedland. This place became at that time as admissions office for all Heimkehrer to West Germany generally admits. When it finally arrived in Cologne with woman and daughter, its call had been already spread as "the physician of Stalingrad", as a rescuer of innumerable prisoners, of the earlier Heimkehrern.

Federal President Theodor Heuss lent Dr. Ottmar Kohler 1954 the large Order of Merit. In the same year it received the Paracelsus medal of the German medical profession. After its home coming he worked as an upper physician to the 2. Surgical university clinic in Cologne and then from 1958 to 1973 as a medical director at the urban hospital in Idar Oberstein. 1978 drew it the federation of the physicians of Germany with the hard man plaque out as indication of the thanks for its life in the service of the next one. In acknowledgment of its achievements at its dying place Idar Oberstein were designated in each case and at its place of birth Gummersbach roads after it.

The writer Heinz G. Konsalik processed the reports over Kohler in his novel "the physician of Stalingrad", which translates since 1956, in 17 languages, an edition of more than two and a half million copies reached. Konsaliks book was finally filmed under title of the same name, with O.E. hate as a medical officer, EH Bartok as a Russian lady doctor and with the young Mario Adorf as a medic. Dr. Ottmar Kohler protested many marks that it wanted to be never the hero, when whom one had represented it in the public. On 27 July 1979 he in Idar Oberstein and he deceased in its hometown Gummersbach were buried.

Its deduction is kept since 1979 in national main archives Koblenz under the signature "700, 184" (278 briefcases: 1939-1979, 0.8 shelf meters). Contents: Documents to the fight for Stalingrad and photos.
