ORWO (Abk. for original Wolfen) was a label name for products of the film factory Wolfen with bitter field, which became later the synonym for the whole work. The registered trade mark ORWO was introduced 1964.
1909 created Agfa in Wolfen the factory, which had later the monopoly on the film production in the GDR. Beside films for the photography also motion picture film for the film art, reproduction count IE and radiographic film material as well as technical films and plates were manufactured. Renaming in ORWO took place 1964, in order to define themselves clearly from (west) the AGFA and to have also on the western market no problems with the entry of the registered trade mark.
For lack of investments ORWO lost the connection starting from the 80's to current technologies, in particular during the color film production. For example ORWO color films up to the end of the GDR were made in the old procedure of the 30's. For this reason the films were only difficult in the Federal Republic of Germany to develop, since many laboratories were furnished to no more for the old technology in the west.
Well-known marks were the NP row for black-and-white negative films and the UT/UK Farbdiafilme. In addition ORWO tape material for the amateur and manufactured the professional need. The mark survived the turn however only by few years.
To the turn it came to many smaller Thus the ORWO Media GmbH e.g. entered into the digital photo service industry. The production of chemical color films however was stopped. Reported on the history of the company Agfa and ORWO and the production of raw film shows the industrie and film museum in Wolfen as only museum of the world at machines from and the 40's 30's.
Only the FilmoTec GmbH in Wolfen continues the traditional film production and produces on the former ORWO area for the entire world market still under the ORWO label worked and self-developed new black-and-white special films for the Kine, copying and monitored area as well as for holographic applications.
