On-line Transaction processing (OLTP) designates a use paradigm of data base systems, with which the processing of transactions, i.e. reading and write operations is the center of attention on at short notice variable volume of data. OLTP data bases store typically only the current data condition, which can be queried or updated by means of transactions. OLTP stands thereby contrary to on-line Analytical processing (OLAP), which concerns itself with the dressing and evaluation during a longer period of collected data.
The special attention with the OLTP is on transaction security with parallel inquiries, minimization of the period of reply of inquiries as well as as high an information flow-rate as possible (number of transactions per time unit). These goals depend on the selection of suitable hardware (data base server) and software (data base management system). By the attention of transaction criteria (see ACID) it is guaranteed that the consistency of the data base remains and data is never stored incompletely or inconsistently.
The classical application of OLTP is the operational cash transaction and/or business process of enterprises. This task is noticed by ERP systems so mentioned. Here personnel data, stocks and business operations, like sales and purchase, are completed. Modern enterprises depend to a large extent on the existence and the correctness of these data. Therefore such applications are classified as enterprise critical. Data base systems have the task all data in such a way to secure that it can come to none or at worst to minimum overrun (data consistency).
Further applications are the content management, knowledge data bases, Webshops, listing services etc.
