Old material (English Existing chemical substance) is a term from the chemical right.

Old materials are such materials, which already were before the entry into force of the respective national chemical law on the market. These are adjusted legally differently (usually less strictly), than such, which came to the entry into force of the law on the market.

In the European union one understands such materials, which already were before 18 September 1981 within the EEC on the market by old materials. All these materials are specified in the European old material inventory (EINECS).

By the forthcoming renewal of the European chemical right it is is reached that old materials are evaluated just as strictly as new materials. This future European industrial chemical right is called REACH (Registration, evaluation, and Authorisation OF chemicals).
