An old letter is a letter from the time before introduction of the stamps.

Temporal classification

Old letters in the weiteteren sense developed since beginning of the excessive quantity of written messages. Old letters in the closer sense one calls the documents, which were conveyed by a regulated postal service. The end of the era of the old letters is in the respective countries to set with the introduction of the stamp, thus first in Great Britain 1840.

Example

Old letter from 24 October 1835 from Wittingen to Ebstorf. The postage for the letter of the first Gewichtsstufe (3/4 Loth) for the distance progression of up to 6 miles (approx. 45 km) amounted to property a groschen and was prepaid (see note left below "fr. 1"). The number of 30 on the top right is the mapping number, under which the letter was registered by the royally Hannover post office owner in Wittingen into the so-called letter map.
