Old Faithful (the old faithful one) is one of the most well-known Geysire of the earth. It lies in the upper Geysir basin of the Yellowstone national park (the USA). Officially members of the Washburn Langford Doane expedition had discovered it 1870 as first white ones. After two days of the observation they gave it its name, since it squirted out the water so frequently and regularly. Since its discovery it broke out over one million time.

Old Faithful belongs to the nozzle-like Geysiren, which have a narrow water jet. The diameter of the chimney amounts to in seven meters depth 11 cm. With 30-55 m a high water gauge, which continues between 1,5 and 5 minutes and between 14.000 and 32.000 litres water sprays, it has an impressing height. It can be still exceeded by the Steamboat Geysir two until three times, these has however by far not this regularity, which makes the old Faithful the tourist magnet.

Between 1983 and 1994 researchers accomplished different measurements in the chimney of the old Faithful. Into 22 meters depth they measured a water temperature of 118"°C. The hottest measured temperature amounted to 129"°C. The temperature in the interior of the earth underneath the Geysirs varies up to 15"° C.

Against some statements cannot one - despite a certain regularity - after old Faithful the clock place. Between two eruptions lies 30 to 120 minutes; momentarily usually between 65 and 92 minutes, on the average 91 minutes. Forecasts are exact only on 5 minutes. The fact that after some earthquakes the distances became larger makes clear that the is very sensitive and is subject many factors. In the Yellowstone national park eruptiert only the Riverside Geysir more regularly.

The old Faithful is scientifically observed for 130 years. It was shown that its outbreak heights and intervals vary to all few from all observed Geysiren. Since it never missed a periodic outbreak at that time. The next outbreak is measured on the basis a formula by Dr. George D. Marler, into those the last interval, the last outbreak duration, which outbreak time and some other parameters flow. This time given in the visitor center (Visitor center) admits.

In order to become fair the large tourist stream, the park responsible persons 1903/04 beside the Geysir let build the old Faithful Inn. The building of the hotel is called largest blockhouse of the world, this is however unsecured. Today further overnight accomodation and food supply possibilities for the order, in addition repair workshop and a hospital stand for visitors.
