The official secret is limited a secret, which itself on a certain, comprehensible circle of acquaintances by office-holders. These are subject to the official secret, i.e. the professional secrecy. The injury of the official secret can pull serve-legal (Disziplinarverfahren), consequences pertaining to labour law and criminal. The official secret in the service relationship of the standing corresponds to the official secret. Special cases of the official secret are further the social secret and the tax secret.

In more than 50 countries in recent time information liberty laws were inserted and are planned in many countries such laws for the transparency of the administration. Such a law grants a subjective right to entrance to official information to the citizens, but finds this right its border in various exception facts.
