The term official routine designates a process control valid in public agencies, according to which during clarifying official affairs (for example complaints or desires) a certain sequence must be observed, in which the responsible in each case superiors or superordinate agencies is addressed.

The advantage of the official routine exists in the transparency of the procedure and the clear authority assignment to the stages contained in the official routine. Against it in practice the automatically associated restriction of authority on a certain stage in each case of the actions has an unfavorable effect, which can withdraw themselves with their decisions to them set the authority framework, without evt. to have to consider associated superordinate consequences, since they are not responsible for this "".

Official routines are particularly in bureaucratic, strictly hierarchically aligned institutions (particularly pronouncedly with the military) and by regulations, sometimes also by laws are obligatorily regulated.

In addition, in the literal sense the term was common. Thus it designated the ways of and to the service, which had to use the coworkers, with the German National Railroad in order safely their goal to reach (industrial safety).
