The number of hours worked per week designates the average number of hours, which an employee must work in one week without holidays. It is frequently subject to collective bargaining and special work time models. Different numbers of hours worked per week are:

5-Stunden-Woche

The so-called 4-Tage-Woche with Volkswagen. It corresponds 36 hour on 5 days.

35-Stunden-Woche

Demand of the industrial union metal in the late 1970er-Jahren and strike topic 1984.

37,5-Stunden-Woche

Applies since 1991 in the retail trade.

38,5-Stunden-Woche

Applied since 1990 in the public service.

40-Stunden-Woche

In former times usual work time and again desired work time they was introduced at present 1965 to the graphic arts industry and 1967 in the metallurgy. In October 2004 the 40-Stunden-Woche was introduced again for all federal officials into Germany and applies in most Lands of the Federal Republic likewise to a national official (and concomitantly a local official).

41-Stunden-Woche

North Rhine-Westphalia applies since 01.09.2003 to officials of the Land of the Federal Republic Baden-Wuerttemberg-applied since 2004 to officials of the Land of the Federal Republic.

42-Stunden-Woche

Applies since:

• 1. January 2004 for hessian national officials
• 1. September 2004 for Bavarian national officials old until 60 years
