The northEuropean gas line (NEGP) is a planned gas line, which is to transport Russian natural gas by the Baltic Sea to Germany. It is to start from Wyborg and end with grab forest, with which the length will amount to approx. 1200 km. Planned operating beginning is 2010.

The line is per year about 55 billion cubic meter gas to carry. That corresponds about half of current German yearly consumption. The costs become estimated on more than six billion euro.

On 8 September 2005 the contract became over the building of the pipeline of the Russian Gazprom (51% participation) and the German Eon and BASF (in each case 24.5%) in presence of Gerhard and Vladimir Putin signs.

On 9 December 2005 the construction work for the Russian land section of the pipeline began in Babajewo.

The project plans also the possibility of building after the completion branchings into the Netherlands and to Great Britain.

Owner and Betreiberin the northEuropean gas line company (NEGP company) becomes.

Protests from centralEastern European European Union states

After the signing there were violent protests on the part of several centralEastern European states, like Poland, Lithuania, Lettland and Estland, which accused Russia efforts to splitting the European Union and Germany the neglect of their interests. The critics in central Eastern Europe referred to the alleged economic of this project, since the construction costses on the sea-bottom are higher around 1,5-mal than by their countries. On the other hand it stands that Russia and Germany will save transit charges, which would flow otherwise to the transit countries through the Baltic Sea pipeline. This, like also the loss of a possible political argument, is an explanation for the violent reaction in central Eastern Europe. A problem as with the gas controversy between Russia and the Ukraine cannot develop during this pipeline guidance.

In addition the ecological aspects and/or risks of an underwater pipeline come in the Baltic Sea.

During the German election campaign 2005 were these arguments part of the party-political argument.

Controversy about Gerhard as a supervisory board chairman

With the ceremonies to kind of building of the pipeline on 9 December 2005 communicated Gazprom boss to Alexei Miller that Gerhard of supervisory board chairmen of the operator company was to become. This led to criticism from different sides, in particular from politicians of the opposition parties, since forced the project actively as a Federal Chancellor with arranged and together with of Russia president Vladimir Putin.
