Nitrotriazolon (short NTO) is an energetic, hetero-cyclic connection, which is used as component in many modern safety explosives. The sensitivity of explosives can be considerably reduced by additive of Nitrotriazolon, without impairing the efficiency. Nitrotriazolon can be manufactured low-priced in two steps.
NTO for the first time 1905 manufactured by Manchot and Noll (see Justus Liebigs annals of chemistry 343, 1, 1905).
NTO can be manufactured by nitrating of 1,2,4-Triazol-5-on (TON) with 65%iger nitric acid with 65-70"°C. The recrystallization from water with Tensiden results in the suitable round particle shape.
NTO forms colorless crystals, which are easily soluble in water, ethanol, methanol and acetic acid. In acetone as well as ethyl acetate it is with difficulty soluble. In nonpolar solvents such as Ether, chloroform and benzene it does not separate. The connection can be recrystallized from Dimethylsulfoxid or dichloromethane.
NTO is a einbasige weak acid. It forms a lightyellow Silbersalz, which verpufft with heating up with silver ions. The value for the education enthalpy is with = -996 kJ/kg; NTO is thus exotherms a connection. The detonation speed with maximum density is with 8560 m/s.
NTO results in pourable mixtures, which are clearly more insensitive than comparable RDX TNT mixtures with TNT. In the mixture with thermoplastic binder NTO is used in press charges for insensitive ammunition. With NTO pourable explosives with favorable safety characteristics and good power ratings can be manufactured.
