Edward "Ned" Kelly (* approx. 1854; "Â 11 November 1880) is of Australia of most famous bandits and for some a people hero because of its resistance against the colonial authorities.
Ned was probably born in Beveridge, Victoria north of Melbourne, in December, 1854. When it saved school child under employment of the own life another boy from drowning and received as reward a which it should carry also during its last combat with the police under its armament.
When Ned was 12 years old, its father died, so that he left the school, in order to support the family. At this time Kellys family pulled into the area Glenrowan, Victoria, today as Kellyland well-known. The police discovered its trace in July 1880 again. Ned concerned on 27 July in Glenrowan and took in the hotel hostage. With the following shooting with the police Ned was wounded. It survived, came before court, to death was condemned and on 11 November in the old Melbourne Gaol gehenkt.
From one of its prisons, today the Ned Kelly museum developed, numerous of his weapons and utensils was issued there. Some call it Billy the Kid Australia.
Since its death Kelly became a part of the Australian folklore and the subject of numerous books and filmings. For some is he a people hero, for others a normal rogue, whose crimes were aligned to personal profit brutally and alone.
The home-made armament, which it carried during its last unsuccessful employment against the police, was the topic of a famous picture series of Sydney Nolans.
