Ndl (abbreviation for new German literature) 1952 a created literature magazine is and was together with sense and form the one of the most important magazines of this kind in the GDR.

History until 1989

One based ndl by the German writer federation (DSV), which published it for the first time at the end of of 1952 and starting from January 1953 monthly. Establishment editors-in-chief were the Romanciers Willi Bredel and F.C. Pointing head. The focus was on GDR literature, West German texts was allowed not in the glaring contradiction to the Marxist-Leninistic theory. Similarly as sense and form was also ndl characterized by arguments by the cultural policy of the GDR:

• In May 1953 for example Heinar Kipphardt published the poem Nocturno, whereupon "formalism was accused to him ". In the December booklet of the same yearly the editorship printed a critical statement to its work.
• When the German writer federation was renamed 1973 in writer federation of the GDR and also a renaming of the magazine was considered, pleaded Anna Seghers for maintain the name "ndl ".
• Against the Biermann deprivation of citizenship 1976 many considerable writers protested. This led to a splitting the author shank, from which ndl had to also suffer.

The edition number, which varied between 8.000 and 10.000, reached at the end of of 1989 with 11.500 their maximum value.

1990 to 2004

As consequence of the reunification the writer federation of the GDR dissolved at the end of of 1990. New carrier became the structure publishing house, in which ndl already since 1956 appeared. After its privatisation by the publisher Bernd F. Lunkewitz was resumed the magazine, but the number of the annual expenditures on six halves. In the course of the 1990er years decreased/went back also the edition ever more; at the time of the of anniversary in January 2003 it was about 3.000 copies.

With a change to the publishing house Schwartzkopff of book works in May 2004 began a new section in history ndl. The publishing house replaced the past sub-title "to magazine for German-language literature "through "magazine for literature and politics "and underlined the contentwise reorientation with a remarkable layout, the first casting of pictures in the four-colour print as well as a new counting of the expenditure numbers: The booklet No. 555 presented itself with a large "1 "on the Cover. From now on the magazine appeared again in the monthly rhythm. But the changed concept did not have a success, and the number of the subscribers, among whom in particular libraries ranked, sank on approximately 1.000. With the booklet No. ""in December 2004 history ended to 8 ndl as literature magazine.

ndl - the anthologie

In September 2005 Schwartzkopff of book works one appeared scarcely 380 sides comprehensive Anthologie with the title "small talc in "and - publicized - the sub-title new German literature in the publishing house. For the future an annual feature way is planned. The ndl anthologie approximated again the traditional concept of the magazine and did - contrary to comparable Anthologien and culture magazines - conscious without the casting of fremdsprachiger texts and pictures.
