The NCR corporation (short for national cash register, NYSE: NCR) is an internationally active US-American enterprise with head office in Dayton (Ohio), which employs (conditions 2005) world-wide approx. 50,000 coworkers at present. The Portfolio of the company covers money automat, retail trade systems, DATA of commodity housing systems and IT-services and by NCR with the term "Relationship Technology (TM)" is summarized. The enterprise obtained 2004 a conversion of 6,0 billion US Dollar after GAAP. In the quality management NCR sets sigma philosophy on the Six.

The NCR corporation is world market leader in the financial self-service range (source: Nilson report), scanner cashes (source: Venture Development Corp.) and DATA commodity housing (source: Gartner) and covers the following branches of enterprise:

  • FSD (Financial Solutions division)
    • Products: Money automat, statement printer etc.
  • RSD (Retail Solutions division)
    • Products: POS-Terminals, bar code scanner, electronic shelf honor systems, Web kiosks, self-service cashes etc.

In Germany the NCR corporation is represented since 1896 by the NRK GmbH, later by the NCR GmbH, which has its head office first in Berlin and since the end of the Second World War in Augsburg.

The main competitors of the enterprise are Wincor Nixdorf and Diebold in the financial self-service range.

Firm history

The NCR exists already for more than 120 years and can be regarded than oldest IT-enterprise of the world.

After James Ritty 1879 had invented the cash register and on 30 January 1883 together with John Birch a patent on it had received, arrived from first the created and led company into the hands of Jacob H. Eckert from Cincinnati, which renamed it in national Manufacturing company, already 1884 however at John Henry Patterson sold. Patterson resumed it now as national cash register company (NCR), the first mechanical cash registers now to large extent produced. The business flourished and the NCR expanded soon also to Europe. 1896 were created in Germany the national cash registers GmbH (NRK).

Patterson established modern selling methods, which were unusual for the time at that time in its company. All salesmen had to always pay attention to a maintained exterior, in regular training courses participate and Pattersons sales maxims - in form of a small printed booklet, internally "the Bible" mentioned - internal. Also Patterson used the already substantial principle of the advertisement in the form of folders, which he sent at dealers everywhere in the states, and invented besides the Flipchart.

John H. Patterson was also admits for his radical "hire and fire" - practice. Among the coworkers dismissed by him because of disputes ranks Thomas's J. Watson, who thereupon its own company IBM based. Both Watson and Patterson were condemned because of unfair business practices to one year each prison.

The product range of the NCR was continual developed further and increased. 1906 developed Charles F. chain ring the first electrical cash register, which was propelled by an engine; later electronic cash registers followed. In the year 1911 the NCR had sold and employed cash registers already over one million 6,000 employees, the market share in the USA lay with 95 per cent.

1953 entered the enterprise into the electronic data processing and were one of the pioneers also there. 1974 brought the NCR the first commercial bar code readers on the market. 1982 came the first NCR UNIX super Microcomputer off the line. 1991 were transferred NCR of AT&T and renamed 1994 to AT&T global information Solutions (GIS). At the end of of 1996 separated AT&T GIS again from AT&T and firmierte again under NCR. 1997 withdrew itself the company from the PC business.

Since August 2005 is Bill Nuti CO (Chief Officer, executive committee) of the enterprise.

History of the NCR in Augsburg

The NRK, the German daughter of the NCR, resettled 1945 of Berlin into the American sector to Augsburg and made thereby Augsburg the "city of the cash registers" (Augsburger work was the largest of its kind in Europe). Center of the 1950er years developed by NCR of close contacts between the city Augsburg and Dayton, which culminated to 1964 in a partnership between cities between the two cities. The section of the B17-Westtangente developed running by the American (barracks) quarter Augsburger of quarter Kriegshaber today carries the name Dayton ring.

In the 1960er and 1970er years busy NCR alone at the location Augsburg of 5000 coworkers (after other sources of 7000 coworkers). In the 1980er and 1990er years the firm location was however strongly reduced again. The buildings factory 1 and factory 2 were broken off 2000, resound to 1 2001 were broken off; the meeting building, in which in former times concerts took place and at the carnival time large balls, and which training course buildings became 2002 broken off. Today (conditions 2005) the NCR GmbH employs still approx. 350 coworkers in Augsburg. Remaining properties and the two last not yet torn off buildings were sold in the autumn 2004 and to be supposed to be backrented partially on a long-term basis.
