The navigation police is after the maritime law practicing income of the United Nations (international law) one of the sovereign tasks that the joined states.

Federal Republic of Germany

After the legal definition in "§ 1 No. 2 sea-task law covers navigation police the protection from dangers for security and ease of traffic as well as preventing of the sea-going vessel travel of outgoing dangers.

As authorities of the water and navigation administration of the federation (WSV) responsible navigation police authorities are the water and navigation managements north (Kiel) and northwest (Aurich) in the range of the sea-going vessel travel as well as them the subordinate water and offices for navigation. Due to these tasks from the departments navigation of the water and navigation managements north and northwest the safeguarding of traffic concept "German coast" was developed, which consists security at the German coast of different modules and with its preventive measures for the protection from dangers guaranteed. In the coastal sea the WSV is supported operationally by the water protection polices of the coastal countries in the navigation-police execution.

The WSV is responsible after the sea-task law also for security and ease maritime traffic outside of the German territorial waters, as far as this is according to international law permissible. As execution forces the tariff and the federal police become active within this range.

Further task in connection with the navigation police is the determination of offences against environmental laws on lake.

Austria

The former navigation police does not carry the name supervision of navigation, in order it with the sea and river police, since the navigation right novella of the yearly 2005 which carry the normal tasks of police out on waters to confound.
