The nature park Stechlin is the region around the Stechlinsee and has already since 1938 the status of a protected area. This is in the north of Brandenburg, 60 km far away from Berlin. Expanded in the year 2001 the protection region as nature park spaciously and enclosure now approx. 800 km and more than 100 lakes. Them are thereby 15. Large protected area of the Land of the Federal Republic Brandenburg. The Naturschutgebiet lies in the Rheinsberger sea-area.
The Stechlinsee possesses the clearest water in Germany and is simultaneous with nearly 69 m depth the deepest lake of East Germany. One can look up to 11 m deeply into the water. Since the sea-surface is for instance on 60 m NN, is the deepest point of the lake under the sea level (- 9 m NN).
Its flat beaches make it a popular bath lake and a outstanding dipping district.
Between Nehmitzsee and Stechlinsee the first attempt atomic reactor of the GDR developed during the early 1960er year. For the cooling circuit a channel between the two lakes was built. The warmed up water had consequences on the sea-vegetation. The reactor was in the meantime shut down and diminished again (the power station retreating longwall system is terminated 2006 not yet).
