The nature park forest lies as nature park with its surface of 177.100 hectars in the south part of the Land of the Federal Republic Rhineland-Palatinate. With a forest portion of 76 % the forest is had the largest coherent forest area of the Federal Republic of Germany and an impressive new red sandstone landscape.

Subsections

Due to the landschaftlichen structure the nature park forest is divided into three areas:

• the northern forest, mountain country limits and to the south reaching up to the line Kaiserslautern - for bath in the north by the
• the middle forest, of the line Kaiserslautern - bath up to the Queich and the line Pirmasens - Landau being enough
• the southern forest, the so-called which gau, which of the Queich and the line Pirmasens - Landau up to the French border in the south is enough

In addition comes the former landscape protection area German crying race, which extends at the east edge of the nature park at the transition to the Rhine level.

History

In the year 1958 the forest was explained including the Landschaftschutzgebiete forest", "German crying race" and "ice and hitting a corner brook valley" as the nature park and placed in the year 1967 with a regulation as Landschaftschutzgebiet "nature park under protection.

1992 were recognized the "nature park forest" as 12. German biosphere reservation of the UNESCO and are since the year 1998 the German part of the first borderspreading biosphere reservation with the name biosphere reservation forest Vosges you, formed together with the French Nordvogesen, north.
