The nature park was brought on 25 July 1969 in pasteboard home by the association "nature park (southern Frankenalb)" into being. The nature park is with 3000 square kilometers surface the second largest nature park of Germany.

Landscape

The area distributes itself over the following districts: Danube Ries, Kelheim, Neuburg Schrobenhausen, district new market in the Upper Palatinate, Roth and Weissenburg Gunzenhausen. As central place of the nature park Eichst¤tt is considered.

The nature park is coined/shaped by the central mountain landscapes of the southern Frankenalb. Typical landscape characteristics are drying lawns, Wacholderheide, damp meadows and quarries. About half of the nature park surface is wooded. The flows from west to east by the nature park and flows into with Dietfurt into the Main Danube channel. The building of this on 25 September 1992 of open channel by the was politically very disputed. It was tried to create with the building natural riparian zones along the swung alignment and to let damp biotopes develop again. The former Flussbett of the was re-designed to old landing on water, so that the landscape works around the channel today at first sight like a nature idyll. Nevertheless the building of the channel was a serious ecological interference.

Spare time

Leisure-time facilities are boat travels to the Main Danube channel, paddle migrations, wheel driving, moving, climbing, sail flies as well as the occupation with the fossil treasures from the law quarries and the inspection celtic settlement traces and old Roman certifications.
