According to Meyers Konservationslexikon of 1854 it is one

"Mechanism for transporting and to the culture of plants under otherwise unfavorable conditions, consists of a flat metallic, well painted bottom part, on which a metallic rack rises for the admission from glass plates. The latters form the side panels and the cover of the box. One fills, puts the bottom part, which possesses some tariff a high edge, with earth into these the seeds or the plants, begiesst and closes then the box completely. The plants prosper excellently, because they are protected and sufficiently provided with humidity against dust and schroffem temperature change, since the water can never evaporate. For tropical plants easily the suitable temperature can be manufactured with the help of a small oil or Spirituslampe. In England and in more recent time several times also with us the Ward box in elegant equipment for the culture of more tender plants in the room are used.
