The Namibia dollar (N$) is the official currency of Namibia and with its independence in the year 1990 was introduced. The Namibia dollar replaced up to then also in southwest Africa/Namibia valid South African edge (ZAR) as official currency. Between both currencies however a 1:1 applies - for parity, so that the South African edge is accepted also today still everywhere in Namibia as currency (in reverse however not). There are notes in the value of 200, 100, 50 and 10 N$, coins in the nominal amounts of 5 and 1 N$ as well as 50, 10 and 5 cent.

Dollar or

When planning for the introduction of a new currency after independence (1990) the again-created bank of Namibia http://www.bon.com.na coined/shaped first sample sets, which were then submitted to the Windhuker Treasury. Since on the name for the new currency was apparent not yet decided, the samples were implemented both in dollar and in Marks. The decision failed then in favor of the dollar.

The sample sets with an edition of 1000 pieces covered four different coins: 1 Mark, 1 dollar (both in copper/nickel), 10 Marks and 10 dollar (both in silver). On the front of the coins which are expressed in Marks a sitting lion is shown, the dollar series shows a shrub man with arrow and elbow, in addition in each case the declared value and the note come "SAMPLE "/"ESSAI ". The back of the 1-Mark and shows still the old coat of arms of Namibia between two ears, the label "NAMIBIA "and the year "1990 ". On otherwise equal arranged back the 10-Mark and the transcription is "INDEPENDENCE "(English "independence ") and "to INDEPENDENCE "in place of the ears.
