Mineral oil enterprises are companies, which make their money by the promotion, refinement and the selling of oil and oil products. (see also mineral oil)

Due to the large dependence of all industrialized states on the oil for the chemical industry, however first of all for transport, mineral oil companies are world-wide influential. The enterprises are often criticized by Nichtregierungsorganisationen. The well-known "Multis" like ExxonMobil, BP, Shell, Total and ChevronTexaco are usually overrated, which concerns its portion of the world-wide oil production. It amounts altogether to approximately 15 per cent. The oil promotion business is dominated by the national enterprises such as Petroleos de Venezuela, Kuweit petroleum etc.

When the Shell company 1995 the swimming oil camp platform Brent save in the Atlantic to sink wanted, the substantial protest of environmentalists and the substantial boycott of European drivers finally brought the enterprise to giving in.

In the course of more scarcely becoming oil resources, the companies enter increasingly also into the future range of the renewable energies.

Current situation

By the high oil prices in the year 2004 all companies with high self-promotion obtained good profits. Shell achieved thereby the largest profit, which was ever proven by a British enterprise.

Examples of further large mineral oil companies are Petrobras, Gazprom (Jukos) or China national petroleum corporation.

The large, internationally active mineral oil enterprises are called often also oil . The term is used frequently in critical argument with the behavior of the enterprises opposite employees, questions of environmental protection and the globalization.
