Metro Madrid is the underground of the Spanish capital Madrid. 226.7 kilometers the long route network opens not only the city, but also several suburbs. After London Underground and the Metro Moscow the Madrider Metro is the third-longest underground in Europe as well as the world-wide sixth-longest. Beside the underground Seoul is considered it as the fastest expanding underground of the world. However since 1994 have itself the length of the route network doubled, further 55 kilometers are at present in the building.

The management takes place via the Metro de Madrid S.A., a subsidiary of the Consorcio regional de Transportes de Madrid. It concerns a public enterprise in the possession of the city Madrid, the autonomous community Madrid and the suburb municipalities. This coordinates also the bus enterprise Empresa Municipal de Transportes as well as , the rapid-transit railway of the Spanish state railway Renfe. All of the capital region are united in a traffic group. The Metro de Madrid carried in the year 2004 approximately 618 million passengers, that is 41% all user in the region Madrid.

Linear network

The linear network of the Madrider Metro is at present 226.7 kilometers long, consists of 13 lines and possesses 190 stations. The track width amounts to 1445 millimeters (10 millimeters more than the internationally usual standard gauge). It corresponds thereby to that one of the former streetcars and is importantly narrower than the Spanish Breitspur of 1672 millimeters, used on the railways. Nearly the entire net runs underground; only straight three sections are at the surface. Thereby the station Aluche at the line 5 concerns the distances Puerta de Arganda - Arganda del Rey at the line 9 and Lago - Casa de Campo at the line 10 as well as.

Like the citizens of Berlin underground consists also the Madrider Metro of two different subnetworks. The lines 1 to 5 as well as R belong to the small profile net. The tunnels are 6.86 meters wide and 5.36 meters high, lie mostly in small depth and usually follow the aboveground road process. While the tunnels are built, the stations exhibit an ellipticity. The small profile lines were established due to their small depth and favorable geology (stable loam and sand layers) usually in open tunnelling method; main header one an excavation out and covered these afterwards too ("CUT and more cover "). With more difficult conditions "the Belgian method was used ", which was developed further in the course of the time to "the Madrider method "(explanations concerning the different building methods under tunnel construction). The small profile station which was under the earth's surface is deepest with 28 meters La Latina at the line 5.

To the large profile net the lines 6 to 12 belong. If the tunnels close of the surface lie, also these were established in the open building method; in this case they are 7.74 meters wide and 6.87 meters high. With depths under 20 meters more modern building methods came to application like the new Austrian tunnel construction method or since beginning of the 1990er years tunnel drilling machines. In these sections the exhibits an inside diameter of 8.07 meters. The tiefstgelegene large profile station is with 49 meters that one the line 6 with Cuatro Caminos.

On both subnetworks the minimum turning radius amounts to 90 meters, the maximum inclination 5 per cent. The upper's building consists of Vignolschienen (weight 54 kg/m) with wooden sleepers on ballast bed. In the stations and in close curves the rails are directly into the concrete of the tunnel bottom let in or for concrete consoles installed.
