MOTS means modifiable off the shelf and designates a COTS product, which can be adapted still on individual needs, for example by openness of the source text. Accordingly the product of buyer, salesman or another person can become "zugeschneidert" on the user.

Sourceopen software can be used both invariably and COTS, and and MOTS product; this is (among other things) a large strength of these programs.

A further meaning of MOTS can be "Military off the Shelf"; this is a product of an external salesman, which was built particularly according to specifications of the military.
