Motorola is an internationally operating manufacturer of electronic systems and elements with emphasis in the ranges mobile communication, semiconductor, networks and Embedded of system with seat in foam castle, Illinois in the USA. Head office of the German address is Taunusstein.

In the year 2004 according to enterprise data world-wide 31.3 billion dollar conversion were obtained. In Germany the enterprise is present by Motorola GmbH. Among it the ranges semiconductors, radio, TK-solutions, mobile telephones, computer systems, broadband communication, telematics as well as Kfz and industrial electronics rank. The society obtained 2004 (2002 still 3500) with approx. 2,500 coworkers a conversion of approximately 4.3 (2,6) billion euro.

2005 had to show the enterprise a conversion of 37 billion US Dollar, which was reached with world-wide 69,000 coworkers.

History

Motorola was created 1928 of the brothers Paul Vth Galvin and Joseph E. Galvin as Galvin Manufacturing corporation (GMC) and renamed 1947 in Motorola.

Galvin MFG. Corp. 1930 built the first commercially successful car radio of the world. The model 5T71 cost 110 - 130 US Dollar, at that time a horrende sum, nevertheless a best seller. They called this, at that time still very heavy and box, "Motorola ". It was a word creation from engine (motorcar, motion) and ola (sound, wave, la ola) [after other sources (fire one): "a combination of automobile and Victrola, the legendary Grammofon"]. Success was so large that it became soon in the USA the synonym for the manufacturer and for a car radio at all.

The company became successful by devices of the entertainment electronics and radios for the employment with police and military. With the development of mobile telephones Motorola took a prominent on position.

Many missions of early US-American space travel had radio mechanisms on board, which were developed by Motorola.

Broad use and find the microprocessors of the series Motorola 68000 found, to the power PC series and the digital signal processors (DSP) Motorola 56000-Reihe.

The Semiconductor Products second gate (SPS), the semiconductor range of Motorola, was separated with two stock exchange courses: From the subrange Semiconductor Components Group (SCG), which mainly discrete elements and standard products manufactured, developed in April 2000 '' on Semiconductor Corp '' with seat in Phoenix, Arizona. The remainder of the SPS, which produced the more complex products such as processors, formed in the middle of July for 2004 '' the Freescale Semiconductor Inc. '' with seat in Austin, Texas.

Apple announced to at least partly say good-bye from the PowerPC to and transfer to the Intel processors.

Main processors

Bases and historical development

In the early development phase of processors Motorola, before Intel, was at that time still clear substantial Kraft for new developments of CCUs. From the dynamics of these two companies resulted further manufacturers of CCUs, which however usually only over a narrow, even if partially quite successful, product range ordered. Common examples from "the Motorola camp "are MOS Technologies and Rockwell International, which the MOS Technologies 6502 (Apple II) or 6510 (Commodore C64) produced among other things. Only the use of Intel processors in the PCs brought by IBM at the beginning of the 1980er years successfully on the market pushed aside Motorola of the leading position.

Architecturally Motorola CCUs and of them stood out used clearly against those from the Intel camp. Remarkable is for example the linear address range, which gets along without a segment offset addressing and thus more easily in assembler code to be programmed is and frequently also to the number of construction units to the bus binding less expenditure places. While Intel used long time a multiplexten address/data bus, with which successively address bus and data bus on the same lines of the CCU were put on, separated Motorola the external address and data bus completely.

Until today the different is constant kind, in which data, which are longer than 8-bit (1 byte), to be stored and transferred. Motorola processors are Big Endian. See for this: Byte sequence.

Motorola CCUs

  • Motorola 6800 8 bit processor, which spread little. Follow-up CCUs were Motorola 6802 and the very successful Motorola 6809, which offered indicated addressing for the first time.
  • Motorola 68000 CCU with 32-Bit-Datenregistern, 24-Bit-Adress and 16-Bit-Datenbus. Became among other things in the first Apple Macintosh, into which Atari ST uses and in the first Commodore Amiga. This CCU separated as one first between supervisor and user mode, which found first large spreading in Unix systems.
  • Motorola 68000er-Familie of derivatives from the 68000-Core became ever more efficient and maintained ground for a long time in the match with the x86-Prozessoren von Intel and AMD. See also Motorola Dragonball.
  • Motorola 88000 RISC processor, which was planned as successors of the 68000-Familie, was given up but in favor of the PowerPC.
  • The PowerPC Pozessor replaced the very successful 68000-Familie in of Apple Macintosh computers. Substantial characteristic opposite current Intel CCUs is the traditionally low capacity, why the power PC is ever more frequently used also in Embedded applications, in which the small heating up of the CCU of usually of great importance is.

Diagram processor

Are the diagram processors of Motorola hardly admit from the 1980-he 1980. But they were far common. Motorola 6845 was heart of the standard IBM diagram maps MDA and CGA and in addition the widespread diagram map HGC von Hercules. Also in the cutter/Amstrad home computer CPC he did his service.

Mobile telephones

Here Motorola led a "shade existence" in Europe for a long time rather, among other things, because competitors were such as Nokia in things Multimedia functions Motorola far ahead. Only in the last years Motorola within this range caught up, for example with the model E398. In the second quarter 2005 it Motorola did not create to increase its market share over over 2% to 17,9% last through by the Windows mobile Smartphones (MPx200 and MPx220). In America Motorola is market leader in this section and can there for example also against Nokia maintain ground. Motorola produced first folding mobile phone with the star TAC, and with the MicroTAC 8900 the first dual volume equipment. Motorola manufactured also as the first enterprise production stage UMTS Mobiltelefone. On the Motorola platform also the first UMTS mobile phones of Siemens are based. Motorola is among other things with the V980, which E1000 and the A-series (A920, A925, A1000) at the European UMTS market represent. The A780 was the first mobile telephone which is based on Linux, which was available in Europe. Motorola brought the first commercial mobile telephone, dynatac the 8000x, to 1983 on the market. With the new mobile phone Motorola RAZRV3 tries to set Motorola new yardsticks in mobile communication. 2005 had the Handysparte a turnover portion of 58 Prozent.Wie also BenQ Siemens produce Motorola a part of the mobile telephones in Germany. Here it concerns primarily the more expensive models.

Portable radio basis stations

Also hardly it admits is that Motorola is one of the largest suppliers of portable radio basis stations. Here Motorola the gigantic know-how comes from the range of the signal processors too good. Apart from the production of AMPS and CDMA systems for the American market Motorola manufactures also GSM and UMTS Basisstationen. At present current series is the product family "Horizon II" (GSM850/900/1800/1900) and "Aspira" (WCDMA, CDMA2000). Earlier series were "Incell" and "Mcell" in addition, numerous basis stations for similar systems like "NMT" or "TACS". For the production of these "European" radio systems Motorola created its own address in England. Among the customers Vodafone, Mobilkom Austria, uvm in Europe orange, rank T-mobile. Motorola is also a supplier for digital radio systems after the TETRA standard. These are particularly used, into Europe and Asia at authorities and organizations with safety tasks (police, fire-brigade etc.).

Professional portable radio

As a manufacturer of the GP & GM series of professional radios Motorola supplies a majority of the users of operating radio and bundle radio in Germany. Variants of these devices possess after permission the TR-BOS and are thereby with police, fire-brigade and emergency services in the use. A further bad radio originates from the MX series. Besides Motorola took over the bad section of Bosch Telecom and thus a almost monopoly during the new procurement of vehicle radios for the BOS.
