Moritz Carl Hensoldt (* 11 November 1821 in Lindenau, Thuringia; "† 10 October 1903 in Wetzlar) was a German entrepreneur and is considered as a pioneer of the optics. He was joint founder of the optical-fine-mechanical industry Wetzlars.

Life

Moritz Hensoldt is born on 11 November 1821 in the Thuringian Lindenau, as a son of the later herzoglichen office secretary Heinrich Christoph Hensoldt and its wife Karoline Margarethe geb. angels, who pulled with their children after 1829 after sun mountain (Thuringia).

In hall field Hensoldt is trained with the and engraver Andreas Wiskemann as the precision mechanic, leaves because of its good performance the training place prematurely with the associating letter and works in the following years first in Kassel at the company F.W. Broad head, later in Hamburg with A.& G. Repsold. There he becomes acquainted with 1846 Carl waiter, whose workshop will take over after its death starting from 1870 Ernst Leitz in the spring

A deep friendship between the two so different men, which will determine its next Lebensjahre, develops.

With same interests and abilities talented, waiters and Hensoldt tried altogether three times to create a common workshop and work therein together. Their entirely different kind of nature however is the cause for the fact that each of its attempts failed. Nevertheless the six years of their friendship, documented in 44 received letters, coined/shaped which Carl waiter Moritz Hensoldt wrote between 1846 and 1852, both men, affected their work considerably. This particularly applies to Hensoldt, which survived that early the deceased friend by nearly 50 years.

In the house of Carl of waiter sister Mathilde Hinckel Moritz Hensoldt has its later wife Christine Ohlenburger, a cousin Mathilde and Carl, knows learned and married 1854 in sun mountain.

Briefly after its return from Hamburg it created a small workshop in sun mountain on 15 April 1847. The official of the company Hensoldt (today group of Zeiss, Wetzlar), 1 April 1852, can withstand newest realizations any longer.

The large solidarity to the father may be one of the causes that the married couple remained first in the area sun mountain. The stations are Oberlind and new city there with Coburg, where Hensoldt in each case possessed a house with workshop. There also first of the nine children of the married couple, from whom sieve alive remained, were born.

Death father in Septembers 1859 and connections, which had both to the area Wetzlar, are probably a cause been that Moritz Hensoldt with a further cousin of its wife, who mechanics and Optiker Louis Engelbert from upper village, which it created could do ago from its Wetzlarer stays, 1861 in brown rock the company Engelbert & Hensoldt, who made themselves with the building of microscopes soon a good name.

Starting from at the end of of 1865 the final removal of both families took place after Wetzlar.

There Hensoldt began at 1877 to build under own name of instruments, first of all telescopes however Engelbert remained up to its death 1887 business and in friendship connected.

The following years are characterized by a constant ascent first of the enterprise purely relating to crafts.

Moritz Hensoldt made itself in the professional world a name with a set of self-developments, particularly on the binoculars and the geodetic sector. Since 1880 the company supplied first the British, later the German army to large extent with its products.

Also in the area of the telescopes, later, for the private and jagdlichen use, astronomical telescopes and measuring instruments, the company made itself binocles (Doppelfernrohre) for that already early a name. Business successes were also the cause for the establishment of a stately building of fresh from the factory 1895 to the Sophienstrasse.

1896 became his sons Waldemar and Carl partner of the enterprise. Moritz Hensoldt attended to its work to last daily.

On 10 October 1903 it already followed at the age of nearly 82 years of its in the spring the deceased wife Christine. In a ring-back signal on the occasion of the of firm anniversary in the year 1952 it means:

"He was a simple quiet and modest man, who lived completely its scientific work. Its memories works also today still under its specialized comrades away, who it, who efficient and honest master of old pellet and grain, among whom best and first ranked, which the mechanic and optics inheritance calls ever belonged. "

Inventions and reconstructions Moritz Hensoldts

  • 1877/78: Reading microscope, an instrument, which finds extensive application with measuring instruments. It is used with exact circle reading off (theodolites, Meridiankreisen).
  • 1879: Scale rangefinder for military purposes
  • 1880: Orthoskopi eyepiece, an advancement of Carl of waiter eyepiece
  • 1892/93: Basis rangefinder as well as the company Beaulieu Cock in Kassel, with whose construction Hensoldt took up an old idea in the correspondence with waiter again to use i.e. picture inversion-ends prism combinations
  • starting from 1897: Prism double telescopes with five-lateral Pentaprisma, which supplies "the standing picture in such a way specified "and which telescope in its construction simplifies substantially with its twice reflection, furthermore the application of large objectives permits, which increase luminous intensity substantially
  • 1899: small rangefinder, a Pentagon Winkelprisma
  • starting from 1900: Binocular telescope with dialytischem system, a combination of the dialytischen objective system in such a way specified with a Pentaprisma with the goal, provided with a roof edge of shortening the path of rays in the binoculars (handy size). With a thereby possible objective diameter of 35 mm when five times enlargement an intensive increase of luminous intensity took place.
  • 1902: Prism sight for rifles: Here the for the first time used again arranged roof prisms made possible a straight-line axle jet without translation:

Note: In order to manufacture 1900 were possible it alone the company Hensoldt, prisms with roof edge in series. The sensitivity of the roof edge, which expresses itself in the case of a deviation from only few seconds in double outlines, made the production of own test equipment necessary.

The special prism construction of the sight found later its successful application in starting from 1906 son Carl youngest of Hensoldts to developed prism telescope, the Hensoldt Dialyt.
