When the industry designated mining industry (of lat. mons mountain), whose predominant enterprise purpose in the promotion of coal or iron ore, in the dressing of the coal or in the iron and steelmaking to lie.

Already in the Bronzezeit and and the following Eisenzeit humans had begun to process metals under high temperatures. To in 18. Century inside metals became manual by craftsmen, which converted Schmieden to goods, tools, weapons and decoration.

With the industrialization and the invention of the steel the Schmieden were replaced by steel plants and factories, which could bring the products in favorable mass production on the market. The mining industry developed. By the new technologies also products became possible, which would have been manually not manageable due to their size, e.g. railway rails and - locomotives, which continued to drive the industrialization in front, or relatively inexpensive structural steel, without which the reinforced concrete construction way of modern large's buildings would not be possible. Also the modern construction of vehicles would be not conceivable without a productive mining industry.

The steel plants and steelprocessing factories settled themselves preferentially in close proximity to appropriate raw material occurrences on. Important locations in Germany are the Ruhr district and the Saarland, where there are coal occurrences. In the USA the mining industry for the same reasons in the area developed around Pittsburgh. Also in Sweden an important mining industry developed due to the iron ore occurrences. Often the villages with the boom, lain around the locations, developed to large cities.

If the mining industry was in Germany into the 1960er years inside engine of the German Wirtschaftswunders, the meaning of the mining industry decreased/went back in Germany for the 1970er years strongly. Since this time the steel crises arising in waves led in the old industrial nations to a radical reduction of production capacities and - accompanying with it - jobs.

In the areas and cities concerned this change accompanied with a profound change of the economic structure to the service company, the so-called structural change. This was mastered at the different locations however differently well and left usually larger problems in these formerly monostructured areas. It is not yet final in many places.

The mining industry is today particularly common in developing countries and third world states.
