Models, which describe, as models are built, call one Metamodelle. In the systems analysis models of material systems are provided. As these models to build (syntax) and interpret (semantics) are is described, by methods. Methods are even again material systems. It lies thus near to describe also the methods again by models.

If the method with its own means is described, develops a model, which describes its own structure. During training into a method one can examine in such a way by the most obvious example whether one understood these. Without commentating one cannot naturally understand this model without knowledge of the method.

A description of the German orthography and grammar in German language is also an example of a description with the own expression means.

Metamodelle are used in the range software engineering and the IT supported managements (strategy management, business process management, IT-Architekturmanagement etc.) for the description by modelling languages. Also metamodellbasiert illustrations between individual models of different languages can to be defined. Example can be transformed a Entity Relationship model into a class model. The standard of the OMG to the metamodellbasierten model to model transformation is QVT.
