Mercure is a mark of the Accor Hotelkette, to which beside less well-known small hotel chains enterprises belong such as Novotel, Etap, Formule Une, Sofitel and Ibis.
At present 750 hotels of the two to four-star category belong to Mercure. After number of hotels it is the third biggest hotel chain in Europe.
Paul Dubrule and Plisson create 1967 SEE d'Investissement et d'Exploitation The first Novotel opens in Lille. The first Mercure hotel develops 1973 in Saint joke, France. Mercure 1975 of Novotel SEE taken over, the later Accor group. 1978 belongs to Mercure 32 hotels. In Germany 1983 the first hotel are taken in Stuttgart under contract; the first hotels in Austria, Belgium and the Netherlands develop. The hundredth hotel is opened 1989 in Brussels. In Brazil the first Hotelresidenz opens.
Mercure grows 1991/92 by the union with the hotel chains Pullman and Altea. In Germany the hotel net is extended by four to 18 houses. 1992 is closed in the new Lands of the Federal Republic for the former interhotels in potsdam, Dresden and Chemnitz leases. In Germany there are now 21 Mercure hotels. In Hungary Accor acquires 1993 a participation in the hotel chain Pannonia with 24 hotels. The group expands Turkey to Poland, Asia, and to Africa. 1994 opens hotels on the Caribbean islands, in Guyana and on La Reunion. one establishes 1995 also in Spain and opens Sweden, in Egypt, Oman and Dubai actively and a hotel in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
In cities such as Berlin, Barcelona, open castle, Weimar, San Sebastian and Bari are expanded starting from 1996 new hotels, the group to Israel, Croatia and Malta.
In Estonia, Togo, on Madagascar, and in Colombia 1997 the first hotels develops. In Egypt, Morocco and in Lebanon is removed the leisure market. In France Accor acquires 33 Frantour hotels. Also in London one is represented. 1998 are acquired the Netherlands hotel chain Postiljon with ten hotels.
148 hotels are integrated 1999 into the network, among them 42 Libertel hotels, 27 hotels in Germany and likewise 27 in Australia. In Algeria, and in Yemen new hotels open Morocco, Mauritania, Jordanian one, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia.
Mercure celebrates 2003 anniversary. Now also hotels belong in Switzerland, in Japan and in Qatar to the group. 2004 44 Dorint hotels are integrated by the partnership of Accor with the German Dorint group.
The group of Mercure covered 2004 578 hotels with altogether 69,686 rooms at the year end.
