The training takes three years in Germany. It consists of theoretical and practical instruction at Technical High Schools (MTA schools) as well as of practical training in hospitals and other mechanisms of the health service. The designations of the MTA schools are different, e.g. medical Technical High School, medical education center, education center for medical welfare auxiliary occupations or institute for medical-technical assistants and female assistants.
The activities are exercised in hospitals, with established physicians, in laboratories/test stations, in research establishments and in different branches of industry.
The name component "- assistant "leads frequently to the mistake with the occupation of the physician aid and/or the physician aid, who however in training and activity differs clearly.
Medical-technical assistants for function diagnostics (short: MTA-F) examine patients after medical instructions with the help of medical instruments. The diagnostics covers four main areas: Neurology (nerves), Kardiologie (cardiovascular system), audiometry (hearing and equilibrium) as well as Pneumologie (lung)

Other medical-technical services have own job titles. The training at medical-technical academies and/or professional schools takes in each case three years.
