Medical officer in the close sense one calls a physician, who is active on an official place of the health administration - as for example public health authorities - or a lower health authority. In Austria against it only the beamtete director/conductor of the health-police department of a district administrative authority carries this title; in Switzerland the director/conductor of the health service in a community is designated in such a way. Medical officers in Germany are in particular specialists or specialized lady doctors for the public health service.

In the broader sense than medical officer also the confidence physician active for a social security institution is designated.
