General Matsui Iwane (jap. Matsui Iwane; * 27 July 1878 Aichi prefecture; "† 23 December 1948) was a kommandierende officer of the Japanese troops, which were responsible to 1937 for the massacre of Nanjing.

Matsui Iwane attained the rank of a general of the Japanese army in the year 1933. It separated however 1935 from the active service. In the summer 1937 it was however re-activated after the outbreak of the second Japanese-Chinese war and appointed on 15 August 1937 of emperor Hirohito personally the kommandierenden general of Japanese expedition armed forces in Schanghai. It received probably from Hirohito personally the order to take the Chinese capital at that time Nanjing. When it left the imperial palace after the ceremony, it expressed itself as follows opposite the Japanese prime minister at that time Konoe Fumimaro: "There is no other solution to break except power Chiang dock sheks by conquest Nanjings. That is what I have to do."

Matsui planned to accomplish its attack on the city in November and let already its troops from Schanghai in the direction of the city advance.
