Matador is a timber construction box, which was invented 1901 by Johann Korbuly.

The beginnings

On the idea for the timber construction box Korbuly came, since the conventional timber construction stones, which used its children for playing, did not make stable constructions possible. Therefore it provided it with drillings and used staffs as liaison vehicles. Later it standardized the entire system, so that the individual parts are combinable with one another in arbitrary form. For the timber construction box developed in such a way Korbuly received 1901 a patent, two years later began it with production and sales, since otherwise nobody was interested in it. Due to large success the first factory in Vienna became soon too small, and 1915 moved to Korbuly to Pfaff places with Traiskirchen.

1919 took over Johann Korbuly junior the company, first together with the younger brother Rudolf, then starting from 1931 alone. Particularly in the time before that 2. To build world war many special parts offered, which made it possible, toy weapons (cannons, mortar, tank, airplanes). During the war the production of the component system was adjusted, and blasting cap boxes for the armed forces were manufactured. With end of war the enterprise burned out due to the fighting completely.

Into the 1950er years came also a sentence of gear wheels on the market, later a small battery-operated engine and drive shafts from steel.

After that 2. World war

1950 a second series developed with large sized stones and simpler liaison vehicles, which aimed at younger children.

1965 succeeded the successful introduction on the market in the USA. But into the 1970er years came production due to the large competition of metal (e.g. and above all plastic construction boxes (e.g. Lego) into problems.

1978 sold the Korbuly sons the company to the newspaper publisher Kurt Falk. This tried with multicolored painted wood and with plastic parts of the competition conditions to hold, had to throw however the towel to 1987.

The new beginning

1997 was acquired the trademark laws for the toy by Michael and Claudia Tobias. By the reduction on the original elements (simple, colorless timber construction stones and wheels) it could again successfully return on the market. The Matador play goods total Ltd. in Altlengbach (Austria) produces annually about 60,000 Matadorsets.

Nevertheless old "original component systems" are acted on toy flea markets at good prices.

Characteristics

The building blocks Matador of beech wood are made. The liaison staffs were produced initially from fir wood, that were pulled by a wood wire-puller from a Holzscheit. Starting from 1935 also the staffs from beech wood were milled.

The name Matador goes on the old idiom it is a Matador in its field of activity back and is the superiority of Korbulys construction to express.
