The Maslow need pyramid is based in a model developed by the US-American psychologist Abraham Maslow, in order to describe motivations from humans to. The human needs form the "stages" for the pyramid and develop in accordance with this linear theory one on the other. Humans therefore try to satisfy first the needs of the low stages before the next stages attain meaning.

Maslow is considered as the most important founder father of the Humanisti psychology, which aimed at a psychology of mental health and which human self implementation examined. Its complete work was substantially more extensive than the model represented here, although this simple representation admits it much made.

Examples of the stages of the pyramid:

  • Self implementation: Individuality, talent development, Altruismus, quality, art and philosophy.
  • Social acknowledgment: Status, prosperity, money, power, career, sporty one of victories, honors, status symbols and Ranger sequence.
  • Social relations: Friend circle, partnership, love, next love, communication and welfare service.
  • Security: Dwelling, firm job, laws, insurance, health, order, religion and life planning.
  • Physical basic needs: Respiration, warmth, drinking, meal, sleep and reproduction.

One calls the lower three stages (and also parts fourth) also deficit needs. These needs must be satisfied, so that one is content, but if they are fulfilled, one does not have a further motivation in this direction more (if one is not thirsty, does not try one not to drink). Growth needs can be in contrast to this never really satisfied. These arise on the fifth stage, partly in addition, already on fourth. Example: A painter draws his need after creativity for self implementation, is satisfied not after a certain amount of pictures. For the representation in principle of needs in the psychology of selling the model is today frequently used by Maslow still.

Misunderstandings and criticism

Once satisfied deficit needs remain naturally not in the long term satisfied. The pyramid does not represent anything, which would be to be satisfied durably, but rather an infrastructure or a logistics for need satisfaction, which always requires work.

A further source from misunderstandings is that Maslows need pyramid does not represent the material behavior of needy ones, but a recommendation for those is, which worry about it. Higher needs can be aimed at quite also without constant satisfaction of the deficit needs. But the responsible persons for the supply of a city or a troop do not know creativity more highly weights as security or religion more highly than bread, even if the concerning themselves act in such a way.

A substantial point of criticism is that Maslows need pyramid presupposes a status thinking civilized west and an individualism, which are not natural. The need pyramid shows a hierarchy, which does not exist without these conditions. In societies, for which the lower needs are relevant, humans do not strive by any means for it, primarily their physical basic needs to satisfy, before they strive for security and social relations. Rather the social relations is in form of the taking up becoming and remaining in a group, a family or a master community the conditions for security and the satisfaction of the physical basic needs. Accordingly naturally also the well-being of the group stands over the own. One is ready to die for the group because without her one is anyway not The three lower need levels may be regarded therefore not as hierarchically arranged, but form rather together a preliminary stage of the material status safety device for the range of the social acknowledgment following on it.

Newer evaluation

The multidimensional motivation models deal with the different connections more differentiated, so that one speaks with this model of Maslow today rather of a general understanding theory and for the practical work with psychologically ill humans or in the personnel development, in addition, falls back with family systems in more complex models.
