Mary READ (* approx. 1685, London, England; "Â 28 April 1721, pc. Jago de la Vega, Jamaica) was an English Piratin and Freibeuterin.
Mary READ father was a sailor, who did not return any longer. Marys nut/mother had already a son, but she became again more schwanger. When their son died, it dressed Mary like the deceased son, in order to secure itself the financial support of their parents-in-law.
With 13 years Mary worked as a Laufbursche for a rich Since you were too boring this activity however soon, she hired on on a warship, which left her after some years again, in order to participate in the army of Flanders. Here it was noticeable particularly by its bravery and ascended from the army regiment to the rider regiment. It fell in love there with the young Corporal max of Studevend. It revealed its secret to it.
The two married and opened the hotel "to Three Horseshoes "in close proximity to Castle Breda. Mary carried now dresses and skirts. Six years later, 1716, their married man died. Again Mary dressed as a man and hired on a Dutch slave ship with course on the Karibik on. On the way the ship was gekapert by the Piraten Calico Jack Rackham and its crew.
1716 followed READ as a man camouflaged Calico Jack Rackham. During this time it met also the Piratin Anne Bonny.
This threw an eye on Mary. In order to let no misunderstandings arise, Mary Anne cleared up. The two became friends. On board fallen in love it itself again, but this Pirat should deny a duel on the next morning against an older Piraten. It was clear that the younger Pirat would lose due to its missing experience. Therefore it argued with its duel opponent and provoked it. The two were set off for fighting on an island. In the course of the fight the Pirat Marys shirt tore up and was surprised that the alleged man was a woman. It used its surprise and killed it. Mary and the Pirat married on the ship, but without priests.
Up to their marriage knew only the captain, Calico Jack, and Anne of Marys real sex.
1720 were attacked the ship, the Revenge, by a warship. At this time they were in Jamaica. The crew, except the women, was drunk and hid themselves under deck. Anne Bonny and Mary READ fought alone. For a long time if this resistance did not last, when then the Piraten came nevertheless at deck, Mary in its rage shot one at her, killed her.
On 28 November 1720 she was condemned after a capture to death. The death sentence was not executed however due to a pregnancy. READ died short time later in the prison at a fever.
