C.F. Martin & CO., Inc. is an instrument making company from the USA.

Establishment time

The founder, Christian Frederick Martin, senior, was born 1796 in Mark new churches, Germany. With 15 years it went with Johann Stauffer into Vienna into the teachings of building of guitars and proved there large talent, so that it was appointed fast the foreman.

To the teachings it returned to its hometown and opened its own business. Shortly thereafter it came however into difficulties with the local Gilden and emigrated then in September 1833 to New York, the USA.

There it opened its guitar construction industry in the same year. In the beginnings he co-operated with a number of teachers, wholesale dealers and other partners. Therefore also many models are from this time with "Martin & treasure" or "Martin & Coupa" bezeichnet.1838 sold Martin its business in New York and pulled with the Manufaktur after Nazareth, Pennsylvania.

After this removal the business wandselte itself to an enterprise with approx. 20 employees and themselves continuously, to 1859 the first factory was opened. C.F. Martin died in the year 1867 and left a successful guitar building firm.

Guitar civil engineering and innovations

Into the 1840er years invents and perfects C.F. Martin, SR. the X-Bracing, which makes a increased stability and maximum stress for the cover possible. The X-Bracing applies until today as one of the best Bracing samples and world-wide particularly with guitars with Stahlsaiten is used.

1916 produced Martin the first Dreadnought guitars. This form was designated according to a type of battle ship from this time and was for a long time the largest design for a guitar. After initial difficulties this design was world-wide accepted and is today a kind brand name of Martin & CO.

Martin built the neck starting from 1929, in order to make possible for the player to reach the federations beyond the twelfth of federation more easily. The innovation decreased/went back to the reference of the banjo player Perry Bechtel.

Martin & CO. today

Into the 1970er years bought up Martin some companies. In addition the Darco stringer company (owner was the family D'Addario) belonged, the Vega banjo Works and other one. From these companies only Darco is today part of Martin.

Beside a set of high-quality series Martin produces also the "Little Martin" for the small purse. The offer is completed by numerous Signature Series and CustomShop guitars.

In the year 2004 the 1 million border was broken.

Martin presented, among other things a set of Signature of models for Eric Clapton, Tom Petty, Eric Johnson, Sting. For this year it gives also Eric Clapton stringer for the Accoustic guitar.

Many famous guitarists use or used since years Martin guitars, among other things Jimi Hendrix, Johnny cash, Joan Baez. Among them also Elvis Presley, which took up the famous Sun session exclusively with its Martin guitar.
