Marks & Spencer is a large British retail business.

The enterprise is beside the supermarket chains Safeway, Walmart, Tesco one of the largest retail businesses among other things in Great Britain, and operates in completely Great Britain over 375 purchase shops, which consist mostly of department stores in city center city situations.

History

1884 opened Michael Marks its first shop in Leeds.

1894 developed a co-operation between Marks and Tom Spencer

1901 were opened the first department store in Manchester

Into the 1950 the enterprise increased rapidly, expanded and constantly increased the goods offered and the comfort in its department stores (e.g. with "Cafebars so mentioned")

1975 was opened the first shops on the European mainland

2001 were given up the expansion strategy and the branches in Germany (Zeil, Frankfurt/Main and others), Belgium and France was sold or closed. The developed losses are article of the Marks & Spencer decision of the EuGH.
