Manfred max Neef (* 16 October 1932 in is a Chilean economist.

Max Neef studied to the Universidad de Chile (Santiago de Chile); it acquired conclusions as an industrial engineer, a Magister in development economics and completed the state examination in economic science. By the University OF Jordan it became the Doctor in Economics h. C. appointed.

Subsequently, he worked for the oil company Shell. it turned to 1957 from the industry off and the problems arms in the third world. He worked for UN-organizations and taught at different universities in the USA and Latin America. Today he is a professor to the Universidad Austral de Chile in Valdivia (Chile).

Lively by Ernst Friedrich Schumachers "Small is Beautiful" it developed theses to a "barefoot economics". 1983 received Manfred max Neef to the alternatives Nobelpreis. It became member club of the OF Rome.

Max Neef defined also nine human basic needs: Subsistenz, protection, affection, understanding, sharing, idle course, creative work, identity, liberty. (tenth, search for Transzendenz, appeared at that time as too daring)

Into the 1990er-Jahren he formulated the insight with his hypothesis of the breakdown point that from a certain point of economic development to the quality of life of humans decrease.
