A management information system is a dp-technical information system. It puts information (usually economical) to the enterprise at the disposal, with whose assistance the enterprise can be operated be steered and/or the Controlling.

In the course of the 1960er-Jahre the need grew to use the new possibilities of the data processing for the dressing of information for the management with technical progress in the computer engineering. In this time the idea of a comprehensive "management information system" (in the following MIS) was born. The concept of the MIS was to be united a very centralistic beginning, the tried all enterprise data of the operational systems in a data model and be consolidated in real time for the analysis. Since the 1990er-Jahren the term became again common MIS in other form. In practice "MIS" is used today as over term within the range of the analytic information systems (like e.g. "Decision support system" (dss), "Executive information system" (ICE) as well as partially also for OLAP applications and electronic report system). As database for a modern MIS serves usually a DATA Warehouse.

In a MIS information is made available to the user, which is relevant for its decisions and can it when planning support. For this the actual information (characteristic numbers of the enterprise and the market), which a material image of the momentary enterprise condition supply, to reports for certain groups of users summarized (e.g. for the marketing department, the purchase, the executive committee etc.). The made available information can serve also as basis for prognosis (e.g. by list of trends). In order to provide to such a prognosis, a MIS can contain also data, which are won by statistic procedures or by estimations and opinions (subjective acceptance) are determined (e.g. Plan data).

There are two main theories, which determine, how an optimal management looks information system. First of all the Kontingenztheorie and secondly the transaction cost economics. The Kontingenztheorie states that under certain situations or Kontingenzen a certain Design is to be selected, while under other conditions certain other MIS Design is to be selected. The transaction cost economics states that different processes or activities cause certain distinguishable contract problems. Enterprises use different management of information systems, in order to deal with different contract problems.
