Malcolm Purcell McLean (* 1913 in max clay/tone, North Carolina, the USA, "Â 25. May 2001 in Manhattan, New York, the USA) was US-American shipowner and forwarding agent and is considered as a father of multimodalen traffic by containers.
McLean was born 1913 in the proximity of the town max clay/tone (US Federal State North Carolina). After conclusion of the High School he worked first as a service-station attendant, until he bought 1934 of the saved money a used truck. Together with its brothers and sisters Jim and Clara McLean created a small forwarding business. In the first years the company made its conversions predominantly with the transport of tobacco.
1937 were already annoyed McLean, which cooperated at this time as a driver in the enterprise, at the long waiting periods, which developed when unloading a vehicle. In the next years it developed the idea, instead of carrying laboriously individual crates and bags with goods from the truck to the ship, many more simply the complete semitrailer of a truck on the ship would be loaded and at the destination a vehicle set. The system was to be transferred also problem-free to courses, but first were no prospective customers, who were ready to finance McLeans idea. There were already several beginnings to be able to transport larger transportation containers both on the rail and with ships but McLeans conceptions exceeded all dagewesenen beginnings.
1955 sold to McLean its portions to the McLean Trucking company - which has in the meantime a fleet of nearly 1,800 vehicles - for 25 millions US$. Short time he took over later the small shipping company Pan Atlantic Steamship company, which was up to then in the possession of the Waterman Steamship corporation, for 7 millions US$. Briefly after conclusion of the assumption McLean acquired two used tankers of the US Navy, which were converted under its guidance to container ships. On 26 April 1956 first of its container ships, the ideal X, finally left the port of Newark (new jersey) with the goal Houston in Texas.
In the following years are established both the idea to begin containers and McLeans enterprise Pan Atlantic. 1957 are furnished the first airline service, 1960 become the enterprise in sealing and unnamed (the company was taken over 1999 by and existed as a daughter until today). McLean sold the enterprise end of the 1960er to the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco company and created in the following years further successful forwarding agencies. The latter was in the year 1992 TrailerBridge, which were led from McLean to its death in the year 2001.
McLean was baptized originally on the name Malcolm, decided however later to accept the traditional Scottish way of writing of the name.
