The magazine for science of history, published by William Adolph Schmidt, appeared from 1844 to 1848 with the publishing house Veit and Comp. in Berlin (starting from 1846 under the title general magazine for history). It can be considered as one of the first scientific technical periodicals of the general historical research in the German-speaking countries.

The historian and climbing pupil Schmidt the creation outlined one "point of combination [s] of the various and absent-minded efforts of German spirit on that areas of the science of history in the first volume as a goal of the establishment of magazine. "(Schmidt: Preface, in: ZfG 1 (1844), P. IV) thereby distinguished Schmidt the magazine equally from political journalism and the "scientific Dilettantismus".
