Lucifer also Luzifer was sometimes a theosophische magazine published by Helena Petrovna Blavatsky. The first expenditure appeared on 15 September 1887 in London.
At first was Blavatsky Alleinherausgeberin of the sheet. Starting from in the middle of 1889, up to Blavatsky's death, to 8. May 1891, functioned Annie Besant as Mitherausgeberin, in consequence published Besant until September 1895 the magazine alone. Starting from this date George Robert Stowe Mead (GRS Mead) became co-editor Besant's. the magazine appeared twice in the year and reached usually 500 - 600 sides extent. The latter, of altogether 20 expenditures, was published in August 1897, then renaming took place in The Theosophical Review.
Apart from theosophischen topics numerous articles of religious kind were published, from Buddhismus over Hinduismus and Christianity to northGermanic religions. Likewise over Astrologie, Karma, Reinkarnation, which became Kabbala, Okkultismus, etc. beyond that scientific topics discussed, over which philosophy of the antique ones rezensiert written and literature, like e.g. Nietzsche's Zarathustra. Also partially sharp attacks were directed against the established Christian churches and organizations. In the ten-year existence more than 2800 essays and article were published.
The name "Lucifer" originated from latin and meant "Lichtbringer". With this naming Blavatsky wanted to clarify the direction of the magazine: To bring the hidden things of the darkness to the light. The understanding of this name results from the article Luzifer. The Lichtbringer (= Lucifer), the favourite angel of God, should the light on earth, to which humans bring. In the long run Lucifer came not voluntarily, but from Michael on earth fallen, which did not make however a difference for far, there the light (= as source of illuminating) the earth and humans (= the subject) to also in this way penetrate could. In this sense the title of the magazine was meant extremely positive.
The same name, with a "z" instead of "C" written, i.e. Luzifer, is equated and however in the Christian tradition with Satan and/or devil. This meaning was and is also recognized the generally due to the Christian excessive quantity. That the reaction, above all Christian circles, was accordingly negative on the appearance of the magazine throughout. The meeting with hostility handed from devil work and to the anti-Christian and equal the entire Theosophi society into this criticism were usually referred.
Since the name meaning in the public, meant by Blavatsky, caused itself not interspersed, in the long run the straight opposite and thus the Theosophie a large attack region for its numerous opponents offered, the name of the magazine was changed in August 1897 in The Theosophical Review.
