The Louis d'or is a French gold coin. It became with the large under Ludwig XIII. 1640-41 imported. It weighs 6.7 g and from gold was coined/shaped. Thus it corresponded the Spanish Dublone or pistol, which was called in Spain "escudo de oro", at that time in France far spread coin. D'or there was the Louis also as part or multiple values. Its shows the header screen of the king Ludwig XIII. with laurel ring. Therefore also the name agitates: "Louis d'or" is called "Ludwig from gold" and refers to the portrait of the king.
The first expenditure covered 1/2, 1, 2, 4, 8 - and later 1/2, 1 and were only spent. With the kings the heads changed: Ludwig XIV., Ludwig XV. and Ludwig XVI.
The last Louis d'or in the revolution years 1792 and 1793 were coined/shaped. The 20 followed them - and with the header screen of the first consul at that time Napoleon Bonaparte.
By "sign Louis d'or" one understands a form of the Louis d'or, which was coined/shaped starting from the currency reform 1725-26 up to the revolution 1793.
The Louis d'or had also called a so large influence that it much-located was copied, so for example the Bavarian "max d'or" and the likewise Bavarian "Karl d'or", "Karolin" or the Prussian "Friedrichsdor".
