Listings (English directories, franz. annuaires) are collections of data of a certain kind. So one can to be called telephone and directories as also catalogs or television programs listings. All listings an arranging principle is the basis: Directories are arranged according to names, catalogs according to topics and television programs according to TV-channels and date.

Technical details

In the Internet and enterprise-internal Intranets listings are used usually to collect user data central and to make applications available. These data collections is usually the basis a data base, in which the data are taken up. In order to step with this service into contact, so-called network minutes are used, in order to query or update data from the listing. Thereby a so-called Directory Access Protocol (DAP) is in most cases used, standard implementations of this minutes is DAP from the X.500-Architektur as well as LDAP, a easy-weighty (lightweight) form of DAP.

A listing service (English: Directory service (DS)) thus one is in the network distributed hierarchical data base, which is based on the Client server principle. In this data base arbitrary information can be stored.

The entries in the data base can be compared, looked for, provided, modified and deleted.

Mostly reading the data of a listing service one accesses. Changes in the entries of this data base are very rare. For this reason listing service offers reading a substantially smaller access time than other data bases.

The structure of the directories services takes place in principle after the so-called X.500-Standard.

If listing service, today practically being based on the LDAP standard, admitted all are:

  • Active directory in Windows 2000 - or Windows 2003-Netzwerken
  • eDirectory, formerly NDS in Novell networks
  • Siemens listing Dir.X
  • Network information service (NIS) in Unix networks (LDAP not been based)
  • Sun Java directory
  • Metadirectory of Critical Path
