Listings (English directories, franz. annuaires) are collections of data of a certain kind. So one can to be called telephone and directories as also catalogs or television programs listings. All listings an arranging principle is the basis: Directories are arranged according to names, catalogs according to topics and television programs according to TV-channels and date.

A listing service (English: Directory service (DS)) thus one is in the network distributed hierarchical data base, which is based on the Client server principle. In this data base arbitrary information can be stored.
The entries in the data base can be compared, looked for, provided, modified and deleted.
Mostly reading the data of a listing service one accesses. Changes in the entries of this data base are very rare. For this reason listing service offers reading a substantially smaller access time than other data bases.
The structure of the directories services takes place in principle after the so-called X.500-Standard.
