Lieutenant commander is the struggle-lowest staff officer rank of the German navy. In the other armed services of the German Federal Armed Forces this rank is called major. In the medical service of the German Federal Armed Forces are upper medical officer and upper staff pharmacists. The rank insignias of a lieutenant commander consist gold-yellow strips of 3 (colloquial: three piston rings) as well as a number of gold-yellow oak leaves embroidery on that cap screen lieutenant commanders are paid after A 13 BBO.

Soldiers in this rank can give crews, NCOs without Portepee, NCOs with Portepee, within the borders set by the superior regulation (VorgV) second lieutenants and captain second lieutenants of instructions.
