Leonhard Tietz (* 3. March 1849 in Birnbaum to the Warthe, Poland; "† 14 November 1914) was a German buyer of Jewish descent.

Tietz opened the first German department store in Stralsund with not many more than the idea on 14 August 1879 that excellent quality should to be able to be sold at fixed prices and during cash payment. It granted its customer a right to exchange as the first. Starting from 1891 Tietz was then in Cologne with a business in the high road. 1905 were converted its company into a corporation. After the death of Leonhard Tietz in the year 1914 resumed his son Alfred Leonhard Tietz the business. The enterprise grew by assumptions and employed at the beginning of the 1930er years of about 15,000 coworkers at 43 locations.

Together with Gerhard Tietz it led still the enterprise, when 1933 the national socialists penetrated to power arrived and on "the Arisierung of "Jewish department stores so mentioned of them. The company was renamed now into West German purchase yard AG (to pre-mount Leonhard Tietz AG), starting from 1936 without additive, remained inside structure however - contrary to many other expropriated companies -. The family Tietz had to deliver their portions under value at banks. It emigrierte and after the war with 5 million DM was compensated.

Similarly it was issued the Hertie founders (value home, KaDeWe) Hermann Tietz, the uncle of Leonhard Tietz and Oskar Tietz, the brother of Leonhard. The department stores of Hermann Tietz are today in the possession of KarstadtQuelle, from the department stores of Leonhard Tietz came out those purchase yard AG.
