The term length of service designates the period, which an official or an employee in its past employment already spent.

A role particularly plays the length of service in the public service, however also in the private sector, in particular if a very long length of service leads to anniversaries with special financial allowance. E.g. in some enterprises with the silver anniversary (length of service 25 years) a further monthly salary is paid; with that 35. or 40. Anniversary even two additional salaries are transferred. Then the material (or fictitious, converted) time of the beginning of service for the length of service is decisive. Here it is often contentious whether e.g. the period of an in the meantime completed study ranks also among the length of service.

The paying length of service of an official (design fundamentals for paying) is legally regulated and does not agree usually not with the actual service duration.
