The company Leitz was created 1869 of Ernst Leitz (1843-1920) as follow-up enterprise of the optical institute created of Carl waiter 1849 in Wetzlar. Numerous further microscope models followed.
At the end 19. Century had the company Leitz from Wetzlar already a world-wide reputation larva in Germany. At the beginning of the new century Leitz introduced the eight hours' working day in its enterprise and created a health insurance association for its coworkers. The company Leitz had been exempted during the Second World War from destruction and could take up so production immediately after end of war again. 1948 were added its own development lab for optical glass, which made some very much meaning developments of glass production for Leitz in the course of the time. Beginning of the 70's one firmierte in Ernst Leitz Wetzlar GmbH over, since one feared to lose the well-known name Wetzlar by the city pool from pouring and Wetzlar to the city Lahn. The connection held however not for a long time, those cities pouring and Wetzlar remained independent. Since the year 1972 a growing co-operation with Swiss company game Heerbrugg AG led the end of the exempt private company Ernst Leitz in the year 1985 finally to the assumption of the last family portions by the again created game Leitz getting thing AG. 1987 fused the game Heerbrugg AG and Ernst Leitz Wetzlar GmbH to the game Leitz company. This company works in particular within the capital goods range, why one end of 1986 the photo range as Leica Camera GmbH solely responsible.
