The term old system or English Legacy system designates an established, historically grown application within the range enterprise software in the economical informatics. Legacy is here the English word for legacy, inheritance, inheritance, also refuse dump.

Within the application landscape of an enterprise there is mostly large computer-based individual developments, which are often characterised by insufficient documentation, outdated operating and development environments, numerous interfaces and high complexity. The central data and function attitude which can be found there applied since the Client/the server euphoria as outdated.

These characteristics are the reason for the fact that the separation of such systems protracts itself often clearly over a desired end of life. Both in economic upswing and in wing over phases, in order to deal the high loss risks and/or changing over costs connected with a separation, particularly the bare replacement of a Legacy system is not often repriorisiert with a direct increase in value, but is connected usually only with the saving of calculatory costs (costs of temporary or durable loss) or (escaped conversions because of limited efficiency of the Legacy system).

Fundamental problem with the separation of Legacy systems is the grown function range. Even if quite frequently a spacious replacement takes place by powerful standard software, usually not taken off auxiliary functions ("golden ashtrays") and interfaces remain. Those are sometimes "golden ashtrays", more frequently however however position characteristics of the grown and over decades developed software, which standard software does not have necessarily. Often a Runderneuerung of the systems is already with difficulty, because they were away not described over history consistently, for example with requirements, applications etc.

The use of service-oriented architectures offers here meaningful beginnings to cover the interface problems by use of connectors. The systems which can be exchanged become outward "totally enclosed", as an intermediate layer from different source systems operates a common interface.
